Dame Esther Rantzen Calls for Change as Illness Prevents Journey to Dignitas

Dame Esther Rantzen, the renowned broadcaster and founder of Childline, has expressed her deep frustration at being unable to travel to Switzerland for assisted dying due to her deteriorating health. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Rantzen had previously made arrangements to visit the Dignitas clinic but now finds herself 'too physically fragile' to undertake the journey.

In a heartfelt statement, Rantzen shared her anguish over the pain her loved ones witness as her condition worsens. "I’m having to go through now, which means that the people I love and care about either cannot visit me, or when they do, see me suffering pain or indignity," she lamented. Rantzen urged Members of Parliament to support the upcoming legislation aimed at legalizing assisted dying in England and Wales, emphasizing the urgent need for change.

The proposed Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which is set for debate in Parliament, aims to provide terminally ill adults with the option of assisted dying. Rantzen, who has been a longstanding advocate for this cause, reiterated that while she does not wish to impose her views on others, she believes everyone should have the right to make their own choices regarding end-of-life care.
