L.A. to Host Exclusive Comic Art Festival Featuring Superstar Artists

The vibrant world of comic art is set to be celebrated in a grand way at the inaugural ICON Festival of Comic & Narrative Art, happening on November 7 and 8 at the renowned Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. This two-day event aims to elevate comic art beyond its traditional confines, moving it from the shadows of bargain hotel basements into a luxurious spotlight.

Co-founders Sal Abbinanti and Steve Morger have curated an exceptional lineup of contemporary comic artists, including the likes of Nick Dragotta, Daniel Warren Johnson, Ryan Ottley, and the legendary Alex Ross. Ross will be showcased in a special exhibition featuring over 100 original pieces, highlighting his significant contributions to the medium.

Abbinanti expressed his belief that today’s comic artists are akin to iconic figures of the 1960s art movement, stating, “This thing that used to be our ‘club’ of comic art just exploded into something that has cultural relevance.” Having previously organized similar festivals in Italy, he aims to foster an environment where artists are appreciated and celebrated, away from the commercialism often seen at larger conventions.

Event Highlights and Artist Lineup

The festival promises an intimate atmosphere with limited ticket sales, ensuring that attendees can engage directly with artists. A VIP reception on opening night will offer guests the chance to mingle with their favorite creators. Among the featured artists are Eric Basaldua, Jim Cheung, Frank Cho, and many others, representing a wide array of styles and genres within the comic art world.

A New Era for Comic Art

With a vision to redefine the perception of comic artists as serious creators, the ICON Festival aims to showcase the artistic merit of comic books in a setting that underscores their cultural significance. “We wanted to put it into an amazing setting and go, ‘No, this is real art and this should be taken seriously,’” Abbinanti noted.

Tickets, including VIP, two-day, and one-day passes, are available now, with the VIP package featuring a signed giclee of a new Ross painting. This festival is poised to be a landmark event, marking a new chapter in the appreciation of comic art.
