Decoding New York's Shopping Scene: A Look at Customer Archetypes

By Editor • September 9, 2026 • 1 min read

As retailers expand their presence in New York City, a keen understanding of their customers is proving essential. Recent trends show brands are venturing beyond traditional hotspots, tapping into neighborhoods that may not initially seem like a fit for luxury fashion.

Brooklyn's Rising Luxury Market

Hermès made waves last year by opening a temporary store in Williamsburg, a neighborhood not typically associated with high-end fashion. The gamble has paid off, leading to the establishment of a permanent location this month. Similarly, the founders of the downtown brand Still Here found success in Madison Avenue, a locale they initially thought wouldn’t attract their downtown clientele. After spotting a Still Here tote on a young woman while dining nearby, they realized the Upper East Side had potential, ultimately leading to their expansion uptown.

Understanding the Customer Archetypes

Vogue Business has launched a series titled 'Neighborhood Watch,' aimed at helping brands identify shopping patterns among their target demographics. Each area of New York City hosts distinct archetypes, from the vintage-loving creative in the Lower East Side, who frequents local boutiques and eateries, to the polished and discerning shoppers on the Upper East Side. The latter often seek immediate purchases for upcoming events, while the former indulge in the thrill of discovery and unique finds in independent shops.

The Dynamic Shopper Profiles

In the Lower East Side, shoppers are drawn to independent designers and vintage treasures. Susan Alexandra, a jewelry designer, notes that customers here embrace a maximalist aesthetic and enjoy the eclectic offerings. Meanwhile, Upper East Side shoppers are characterized by their sense of community and loyalty to local stores. They expect top-notch service and often favor established luxury brands while balancing family and personal style.
