MILAN — Despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has sent shockwaves through global markets, design firms are pressing forward with ambitious expansion plans in the region. The turmoil, while affecting exports and trade dynamics, has not deterred key players in the interior design sector from seizing growth opportunities.
Export Challenges and Market Adjustments
The conflict has significantly impacted Italy’s luxury design sector, which saw a notable decline in exports during the first quarter of 2026. According to Claudio Feltrin, president of FederlegnoArredo, exports to the Middle East fell by 23.4 percent, with exports to the UAE and Saudi Arabia plunging by 78.5 percent and 57.3 percent, respectively. Feltrin noted, “The sharp slowdown in the United States, together with difficulties in Germany and France, is reducing momentum in our key markets.” Despite these challenges, there are initial signs of recovery in OPEC countries.
Strategic Expansions Amid Conflict
In the face of adversity, companies like Kartell and Giorgetti are doubling down on their commitments to the Middle East. Kartell plans to launch a flagship store in Riyadh by fall 2026, marking a significant milestone in its international strategy. Similarly, Giorgetti's CEO Giovanni del Vecchio emphasized the need to invest in the Middle East to foster an appreciation for Italian design among the local populace. Despite earlier setbacks, he reported positive sales trends beginning in March.
Event Continuation and Positive Trends
While the conflict has caused delays in some key design events, major exhibitions like Dubai Design Week and the Design Doha Biennale are still on track. Dubai Design Week is set for November 3-8, and the event is seen as critical for the region's projected design market growth to $35 billion by 2031. Mette Degn-Christensen, director of Downtown Design, noted the increasing demand for design in the region, highlighting that the resilience of the industry is vital for its future.
As the luxury retail sector adapts to the ongoing challenges, experts predict continued demand driven by domestic wealth and government investments. This highlights the Middle East's enduring appeal as a hub for international business and affluent consumers.
