In a landmark ruling, Ecuador's National Court of Justice has imposed a five-year prison sentence on former president Lenín Moreno for his involvement in bribery linked to the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric project. This significant verdict was delivered on Friday, revealing Moreno's participation in a scheme involving kickbacks during the construction and financing of the dam.
Joining Moreno in this conviction are Cai Runguo, the former Chinese ambassador in Quito, as well as Yang Huiju and Song Dongsheng, both former officials of the Chinese state construction company Sinohydro, who received the same five-year term.
