Euthanized Bear Highlights Alarming Rise in Human-Bear Conflicts in Colorado

A black bear in Durango, Colorado, was euthanized on September 9 after wildlife officials found it suffering from severe internal issues linked to food scarcity. The bear, discovered in a residential yard, was in distress and had a bloated belly filled with trash.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Officer John Livingston reported that the bear was lethargic and moaning when they arrived. After a tranquilization, officials conducted a necropsy, revealing a stomach packed with cleaning wipes and trash bags, indicating the bear had been consuming human waste.

Surge in Bear Conflicts

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as CPW recorded over 8,000 bear reports this year, marking the highest number in history. Euthanizations have surged to more than 294 bears in 2023, a significant jump from just 98 the previous year. Livingston noted that ongoing drought and an early spring freeze have drastically reduced natural food sources, pushing bears into human habitats in search of food.

Public Safety Measures Urged

As fall approaches, CPW is urging residents to take precautionary measures to prevent bear encounters. They recommend using bear-resistant trash cans and ensuring they are cleaned regularly to avoid attracting bears. Leaving windows and doors open or cars unlocked increases the risk of bear intrusions, which could lead to dangerous situations.

Livingston emphasized the importance of scaring away bears that wander too close to homes. He encourages residents to make noise and take action to deter bears, highlighting that this year presents unique challenges for both wildlife and residents.
