Philippine Ferry Fire Claims 76 Lives as Recovery Efforts Continue

In a tragic maritime disaster, the death toll from the devastating fire aboard the MV June Aster ferry has risen to 76, with 13 individuals still missing. The incident unfolded on Wednesday while the vessel was en route past the picturesque Palawan region, a popular tourist destination in the Philippines.

Rescue teams have made significant progress in the recovery operation, retrieving 41 additional charred remains as they gained access to previously unreachable areas of the ferry. On Friday, firefighters were able to enter the ferry for the first time after extinguishing the blaze. The Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that the burnt remains were located in the ferry’s economy accommodation section.

Philippine Coast Guard official Geronimo Tuvilla emphasized that identifying the victims is a top priority, as anxious family members await news of their loved ones. One such person is Anelyn Magbanua, whose husband was on the ferry after visiting their children in Manila. Desperately hoping for his survival, she expressed her fears about the fate of those on board. Eyewitness accounts suggest that explosions preceded the fire, which erupted and spread rapidly, engulfing the vessel.
