The Falkland Islands Government has officially recognized September 3rd as Merchant Navy Day, a significant occasion dedicated to honoring the contributions of seafarers in the Merchant Navy. This day serves not only as a tribute to those who have served in the past but also to those currently navigating the seas, ensuring vital connections with the global community.
To mark this occasion, the iconic Merchant Navy Flag, affectionately known as the “Red Duster,” alongside the Falklands Ensign, will be prominently displayed at Victory Green. This gesture pays homage to the courageous efforts of the 62 Merchant Ships and 22 Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ships that played a crucial role in supporting British Armed Forces during the liberation of the islands in 1982.
As the Falkland Islands reflects on this day, there is a collective appreciation for the service and sacrifice of all who have served at sea. The government extends its heartfelt thanks to both past and present personnel of the Merchant Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary for their unwavering dedication, which continues to ensure the islands' connection to the wider world.
