Food Safety Crisis: Nearly 2,000 Ill from Indonesia's School Meals Program

In a troubling development for Indonesia's ambitious Free Nutritious Meals program, nearly 2,000 individuals, predominantly students, have reported illnesses suspected to be linked to meals distributed under the initiative. The incidents, which have raised serious food safety concerns, occurred over just a few days in early September 2026.

Widespread Outbreaks Across Multiple Regions

The health crisis unfolded between September 1 and 3, affecting students and teachers across East Java, Central Java, West Sumatra, Aceh, and South Sulawesi. The most severe outbreak was documented in Central Java's Rembang regency, where 752 students and 25 teachers fell ill after consuming meals from the program. Symptoms included diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, according to local health officials.

A similar situation arose in Sidoarjo, East Java, where 730 students from an Islamic boarding school reported food poisoning symptoms, prompting health authorities to monitor their conditions closely. Meanwhile, 276 other cases were recorded in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, leading to a temporary suspension of food distribution from the local nutrition service center.

Ongoing Investigations and Previous Incidents

As investigations continue into the causes of these outbreaks, it has become evident that this is not an isolated issue. Since the program's launch in January 2025, over 50,000 individuals across 36 provinces have reportedly experienced food poisoning linked to the initiative. Sudaryono, head of the National Nutrition Agency, indicated that 80% to 90% of past incidents stem from poor adherence to food safety protocols, including improper food storage and handling.

In response to these alarming statistics, the agency is intensifying oversight of meal providers, with plans to review approximately 27,000 meal distribution centers nationwide. Authorities have already shut down 833 kitchens for failing to meet hygiene standards, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the program that aims to nourish nearly 90 million students and vulnerable populations.
