From Petty Bet to Passion: My Journey into Running

Last fall, a lighthearted jab at a friend's fitness obsession spiraled into an unexpected journey that would transform my life. What began as a petty challenge—signing up for the 2026 NYC United Half Marathon lottery—quickly turned into a serious commitment when I found myself selected, while my friends, all seasoned runners, were left out.
Despite having some athletic background from dance and rowing, I was woefully unprepared for the rigors of half-marathon training. My initial enthusiasm faded as I faced the harsh realities of early morning runs in freezing temperatures. Yet, the satisfaction of accomplishing my daily runs fueled my motivation, especially as I shared my progress with colleagues at Vogue. The balance between my demanding job in fashion and my newfound dedication to running provided me with a refreshing sense of control and purpose.
As I completed races both at home and abroad, I discovered a community and a routine that invigorated my life. The thrill of running ten miles on a sunny Sunday morning was now coupled with celebrating with friends over frozen margaritas, marking a beautiful blend of fitness and social life. However, after the final race, I found myself grappling with a sense of loss without my structured training schedule. The joy of sleeping in was quickly overshadowed by a feeling of incompleteness.
Determined not to let this newfound void linger, I replaced my worn-out sneakers, eager to hit the pavement again. This journey has shown me that running is more than just a hobby; it has become an essential part of who I am.
