George Clooney Critiques Authoritarianism in Venice Speech

At the Venice Film Festival, George Clooney captivated audiences with a powerful speech while accepting the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. He addressed the current climate of fear propagated by those in power, stating, "We’re living through a moment in time where the people in charge and people with the most money are telling us to fear one another. But we know better than that, don’t we?"

Clooney emphasized the vital role of artists and journalists in resisting authoritarianism, declaring that they are often the first targets of oppressive regimes. "The first people that authoritarians try to shut down are not politicians. They’re journalists who ask questions," he noted. He went on to argue that stories pose a threat to those who manipulate fear, stating, "The people who are afraid of books and music and stories are never the heroes in history."

Wrapping up his address, Clooney acknowledged the limitations of film, yet highlighted their profound impact: "So yes, movies don’t stop wars… But they do something remarkable. They remind us that a stranger is never a stranger."

On the state of the U.S., he introduced the term "kakistocracy," describing it as a government run by the least qualified. He expressed optimism about upcoming elections, stating, "We will have an election in November that should be a check and balance… and then in 2028, we will have a restoration of some normalcy."
