Olympic Rower Jack Beaumont Faces Threatening Encounter on River Thames

Jack Beaumont, an Olympic silver medalist in rowing, experienced a terrifying moment on the River Thames when a motorboat operator exhibited dangerously erratic behavior. During a training session near Maidenhead Rowing Club on Sunday morning, Beaumont witnessed the motorboat collide with another rowing boat, sparking a chaotic scene.

As Beaumont attempted to intervene, the motorboater, a 67-year-old man from Windsor, allegedly began shouting profanities and making threats. "I was afraid because there’s not really anywhere to go on the river. I worried he was going to ram into me or something," Beaumont recounted, highlighting the unpredictability of the situation.

Thames Valley Police have since arrested the man involved, who has been released on conditional bail as the investigation proceeds. Police reports indicated that he verbally abused multiple rowers and drove his boat recklessly, creating a hazardous environment.

Beaumont recalled the moment when rowers, facing backward, were caught off guard by the approaching motorboat. While one rower managed to evade a collision, another was not as fortunate, resulting in damage to their equipment. After the incident, Beaumont urged the affected rowers to document the boat’s details.

Detective Inspector Laura Al-Owaied stated that the police are prioritizing this investigation and are seeking witnesses, especially those with video evidence from the area during the incident. Maidenhead Rowing Club emphasized their commitment to safety, condemning the reckless behavior that endangered their members and other river users.
