How 9/11 Transformed My Perspective on Anime

As the world marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a personal reflection emerged from Japan, where the events unfolded in the quiet of the night. For many in my generation, New York City was once seen as the epicenter of culture and ambition—an emblem of pride intertwined with a hint of irony. However, the tragic events of 9/11 shattered that illusion, turning its iconic skyline into a stark reminder of vulnerability.
Years later, I found myself back in New York, immersed in the world of anime as a writer. My living space was transformed into a shrine of Japanese animation, filled with classics like “Akira,” “Grave of the Fireflies,” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” These titles, previously enjoyed through the lens of a fan, took on new meanings in the wake of tragedy, as I revisited them with a fresh perspective shaped by the weight of history.
