Innovative Indonesian Home Seamlessly Integrates Nature with Living Spaces

In a remarkable blend of architecture and nature, the Split Mass Residence in BSD, South Tangerang, Indonesia, redefines what a home can be. Completed in 2026 by K-Thengono Design Studio, this 712-square-metre residence is designed not just for aesthetics but for movement and community, inviting its inhabitants to engage with both the space and the surrounding environment.
A New Approach to Residential Design
Kelvin Thengono, the founder of K-Thengono Design Studio, envisioned a home that fosters connection among family members while harmonizing with the landscape. The design cleverly utilizes a corner lot to create a unique layout where the home’s volumes are separated and reconfigured, ensuring that every pathway feels intentional. This innovative approach transforms the notion of home into a dynamic experience.
Rooftop Transformation
One of the standout features of the Split Mass Residence is its tiered, sloping roof that doubles as a lush garden. This design blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, with a glass door leading from the open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area directly onto a grassy rooftop slope. An outdoor staircase ascends to a pool and barbecue area, making the roof the social nucleus of the home.
Material Choices and Architectural Harmony
The exterior of the residence showcases a thoughtful combination of materials. Concrete provides a solid foundation, establishing a sense of permanence, while woven PE rattan panels add warmth and texture. This deliberate contrast enhances the house's character, creating a tactile environment that remains inviting without sacrificing privacy. Instead of conforming to typical residential styles, the Split Mass Residence stands out with its intentional design that encourages family interaction and connection with nature.
