Kim Jong Un Unveils New Destroyer as Part of North Korea's Nuclear Strategy

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant military development, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced that the country's latest destroyer, the "Kang Kon," will play a crucial role in its nuclear response strategy. This declaration was made during a commissioning ceremony held on September 6 in Wonsan, as reported by state media outlet KCNA.

Kim emphasized that the new 5,000-ton-class destroyer is set to deliver what he termed "annihilating retaliatory strikes," although KCNA did not clarify whether the vessel would be armed with nuclear weapons. The introduction of the Kang Kon follows the earlier commissioning of a similar destroyer, the "Choe Hyon," which took place just three months prior on North Korea's west coast.

Highlighting North Korea's commitment to modernizing its naval forces, Kim stated that the deployment of the Kang Kon would send a decisive message to the nation’s adversaries. He asserted, "The time has come for us to exercise our sovereignty at sea and under water." The leader also hinted at further naval enhancements, announcing plans to showcase additional military developments in eight months, alongside ongoing construction of new naval bases on the eastern coast.
