Jamaat-i-Islami Plans Major Protest March Against Petroleum Levy

In a bold move signaling escalating tensions, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a significant march towards Islamabad on September 20, demanding the abolition of the contentious petroleum levy. Addressing a large gathering in Gujranwala, Rehman warned that the protest could enter a 'decisive phase' if the government fails to withdraw the levy before the planned march.

Rehman emphasized the party's resolve, stating that caravans from across the nation would converge on the federal capital. He urged the current leadership, whom he referred to as the 'Form-47 rulers', to heed the public's outcry for relief. 'If the petroleum levy is not abolished before the long march begins, the decision will be made on the streets of Islamabad,' he declared, threatening to initiate a movement to unseat the government if their demands are ignored.

Concerns Over Economic Burdens

The JI leader criticized the government's tax policies, highlighting that Rs114 per litre is collected in taxes on petrol and Rs100 on diesel, contributing to the public's growing discontent. As protests against the levy continue, now in their 27th day, Rehman pointed out that over Rs1,567 billion had been raised from the public through this levy, questioning why citizens are subjected to such financial burdens while basic healthcare and education remain out of reach for many.

Broader Social Issues and Government Accountability

During his address, Rehman also took aim at the broader social issues facing Pakistan, including the exploitation of women and the plight of the working class. He noted the alarming statistics of violence against women in Punjab and challenged the provincial government to provide transparency regarding its financial dealings, particularly in light of recent controversies surrounding Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's travel expenses.

As part of the JI's ongoing efforts, Rehman announced plans for expanded sit-ins and a special address to women in Islamabad, further amplifying the party's commitment to addressing pressing societal issues. The JI's protests are not merely against the petroleum levy but reflect a deeper frustration with longstanding governance failures and economic inequality in Pakistan.
