Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi Advocates for Enhanced Collaboration with IEA on Energy Security

In a bid to bolster energy security amid ongoing global supply challenges, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called for a closer partnership with the International Energy Agency (IEA). During a meeting in Tokyo on Monday with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, Takaichi emphasized the importance of developing a more resilient global supply-demand structure, particularly in light of recent disruptions stemming from Middle Eastern instability.
Takaichi revealed that her government had introduced a policy package aimed at enhancing energy procurement, which includes initiatives to support the establishment of a pipeline that would bypass the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This move is seen as a crucial step towards mitigating risks associated with oil supply vulnerabilities.
Birol acknowledged Japan's proactive stance on energy security within Asia, expressing the IEA's commitment to support Japan's initiatives. The discussions also included insights from industry minister Ryosei Akazawa, who, in a separate meeting with Birol, reiterated the necessity for closer cooperation given the uncertain future of global energy supplies.
