Luca Guadagnino's 'Artificial' Set for World Premiere at New York Film Festival 2026

Luca Guadagnino's much-anticipated film 'Artificial,' which delves into the founding of OpenAI and the complex figure of Sam Altman, will make its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival. Scheduled for October 5 at Alice Tully Hall, the event will feature the director and cast members in attendance, adding a touch of glamour to the festival.

The film's journey has been tumultuous. Originally set up with Amazon MGM in early 2025 and completed by fall, it was unexpectedly dropped by Amazon in June after the company’s $50 billion partnership with OpenAI. Shortly thereafter, Neon acquired the project, allowing it to find new life.

Described as a “thrilling, funny, and very human” narrative, 'Artificial' explores the moral complexities surrounding artificial intelligence. It chronicles the story of Soviet-born computer scientist Ilya Sutskever and his pivotal encounter with Sam Altman, played by Andrew Garfield. The NYFF's Artistic Director, Dennis Lim, praised the film for its unique tone, emphasizing its timely reflection on the current AI crisis.

As part of the festival running from September 25 to October 12, 'Artificial' stands out as a significant entry, with its script by Simon Rich probing the blurred lines between humanity and technology.
