Macron Advocates for Collaborative Space Management at Paris Summit

At the International Space Summit in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for a 'shared governance' model for outer space. His remarks came during a pivotal speech at the event which gathered industry leaders and officials from approximately 120 countries.

Macron highlighted the fragility of Europe’s current space capabilities but expressed optimism about the continent's potential to emerge as a significant player in the global space industry. He announced a substantial investment of €20 billion aimed at bolstering Europe’s space sector and called for the development of an independent crewed spaceflight program.

He noted, “Outer space remains the only major global commons that is not subject to regulations that match the stakes,” underscoring the urgency for collaborative governance. The summit has attracted key figures from Europe and beyond, as nations seek to enhance their sovereign space capabilities, particularly in light of recent global events that have showcased vulnerabilities in existing infrastructures.
