Man City Secures Enzo Fernandez in Historic £125m Deal with Chelsea

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 1 min read

Manchester City has finalized a remarkable £125 million deal for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, marking a joint-British transfer record. This fee matches the record Liverpool set for Alexander Isak last summer.

Fernandez, 25, made headlines in 2023 when he joined Chelsea from Benfica for a then-record £107m. Now, after intensive negotiations, he is set to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract with City, where personal terms are not expected to pose any issues.

The Argentine international has been eager to leave Chelsea, a desire he has maintained since March, despite the club initially hoping to retain him. His absence from Chelsea's recent matches, including a thrilling 4-3 Premier League win over Brighton, has fueled speculation about his impending transfer.

City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, is excited to bring him into the fold, especially after the departure of several midfielders this summer. The transfer is a significant move for both clubs, with Chelsea likely to post a record income from player sales, surpassing £400 million after also selling Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap.

This transfer underscores a busy summer in the Premier League, where four players have now switched for fees exceeding £100 million. As Chelsea looks to rebuild after a disappointing season, City continues to enhance its squad, having already broken its own transfer record twice this summer.
