Tony Romo Faces Consequences After DUI Plea and Issues Apology

Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned CBS NFL analyst, has publicly apologized following his no contest plea to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. His arrest occurred on July 23 during a traffic stop on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin.

As a result of the legal proceedings, Romo has lost his driving privileges for six months and was fined $834. Additionally, he is required to undergo an alcohol assessment program and install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he operates for at least a year after regaining his license.

Romo, 46, expressed his remorse in a heartfelt statement on Instagram, acknowledging the challenges he has faced over the past month. He revealed that chronic pain from multiple back surgeries led to a dependency on pain medication, which ultimately resulted in his reliance on alcohol. "None of this is an excuse," he stated, taking full responsibility for his actions.

While he seeks to improve his health and personal life, Romo has been placed on leave from CBS, where he has been a lead game analyst since 2017. CBS Sports president David Berson has not provided a timeline for Romo’s return. In the interim, analyst JJ Watt will step in alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for CBS’ coverage of the upcoming NFL season, starting with the Vikings vs. Packers game on September 13.
