As the Toronto International Film Festival approaches, filmmaker Roshan Sethi is making headlines not only for his latest project, 'The Surgeon,' but also for his unconventional preparation for it. Unlike many directors who are scrambling to finish edits, Sethi has been balancing his time as a practicing radiation oncologist with his filmmaking duties.
Set to premiere on September 12, 'The Surgeon' stars Michelle Yeoh as a retired surgeon whose life takes a dramatic turn when she is kidnapped and forced to perform surgery on a mysterious patient. The film promises to deliver high-stakes tension and a fresh take on the action genre, with scalpels and medical procedures replacing the usual guns and fists.
From Medicine to Film
Prior to writing the screenplay in just ten days, Sethi drew inspiration from his medical background and his fascination with anatomy. Despite his previous works being comedies, he has always had a penchant for thrillers. Yeoh, on the other hand, sought a project that deviated from her typical roles in high-octane action films. Following her success in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' she was eager for a unique challenge.
Authentic Preparation
To ensure she portrayed a surgeon authentically, Yeoh underwent specialized training at the Royal College of Surgeons, impressing everyone with her commitment. Sethi highlighted her natural ability to embody the role, likening her presence to that of a military commander in the operating room. The film was shot quickly, in just 26 days, with Sethi emphasizing efficiency in the process, often achieving desired shots in a single take.
While 'The Surgeon' features plenty of action, it also takes the time to educate viewers about the medical science behind the unfolding drama, adding depth to the action sequences. Sethi’s distinctive vision for the film allowed him to maintain creative control by opting for independent production, sidestepping traditional studio routes. With its unique premise and Yeoh's star power, 'The Surgeon' is poised to make a significant impact at TIFF.
