Mike Dean Reflects on Quirky Refereeing Challenges

By Editor • September 3, 2026 • 1 min read

Mike Dean, the former Premier League referee, recently shared amusing anecdotes from his officiating days during an appearance on Jamie Vardy's podcast. He revealed that he would often set playful challenges for himself during matches, such as seeing how long he could avoid blowing his whistle.

"We used to say 'we'll kick off now. Right, see how long we can go without blowing a whistle,'" Dean recounted, noting that he managed to go up to 25 minutes without interrupting play. He also entertained himself by remaining in the center circle for as long as possible, claiming he once lasted 15 minutes.

However, his claims have raised eyebrows among referee circles, with some questioning their validity, particularly as they reference the pre-VAR era. Dean, who officiated for 28 years and retired in 2022, has previously stirred controversy with his remarks, including a notable incident during a Chelsea vs. Tottenham match.
