Nagoya's Flooding Leaves Asian Games Venues Intact, Athletes Safe

Despite severe flooding that struck Nagoya, Japan, early arrivals for the Asian Games have been declared safe, according to Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa. The mayor assured reporters on September 9, 2026, that the conditions of the venues remain stable, alleviating concerns about the upcoming event.
The Asian Games, set to commence on September 19, are expected to attract over 11,000 athletes from 45 nations across Asia, surpassing the participant count of the recent Summer Olympics in Paris. Hirosawa noted that the previous edition of the Games took place three years ago in Hangzhou, China.
During the heavy rains, which began on September 8, about 400 athletes and staff residing in temporary housing made from converted shipping containers were briefly evacuated to higher ground. Although there were reports of leaking roofs at some venues, the mayor confirmed that no substantial damage was incurred. Meanwhile, record rainfall led to the flooding of numerous roads and homes, prompting emergency shelters to accommodate around 3,500 displaced residents.
