Japanese Lawmakers Push for Prime Minister's Support of ICC at U.N.

A coalition of Japanese lawmakers has called on Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to advocate for the International Criminal Court (ICC) in her upcoming speech at the U.N. General Assembly on September 22. This appeal comes from the Nonpartisan Parliamentary Association for Reconsidering Human Rights Diplomacy, which aims to address pressing issues surrounding international justice.
The lawmakers delivered a written recommendation regarding U.S. sanctions imposed on ICC President Tomoko Akane to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayano Kunimitsu earlier this week. They are urging the Japanese government to formally request the United States to reconsider these sanctions, emphasizing the need for international cooperation in human rights matters.
Gen Nakatani, co-chair of the association, highlighted the importance of the U.N. platform for Japan to assert its position globally. “The U.N. General Assembly session is a place where a country should make its case to the world,” he stated. “We want Japan to protect the ICC through the (prime minister’s) address and contacts with other countries,” he added, signifying the urgency of their request.
