Nepal Faces Fresh Flood Alerts as Death Toll from Catastrophic Flooding Rises

As Nepal grapples with the aftermath of devastating flash floods and mudslides, authorities have issued new flood alerts across several districts, urging communities near rivers to stay alert and take necessary precautions. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has identified Nuwakot and Rasuwa as areas particularly at risk, warning of increased water flow in smaller rivers and streams.
In the wake of the disaster, which began on August 26, Nepal has seen a tragic death toll rise to 987, with over 3,900 individuals reported missing, including 583 foreigners. Rescue operations are ongoing, with more than 11,000 people rescued so far. The government has deployed 16 helicopters to assist in these efforts, with security personnel and local authorities intensifying their search for the missing.
In Kathmandu, a poignant scene unfolds outside Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where families search for their loved ones, posting photographs of the missing alongside those who have perished. The emotional weight of the situation is palpable as community members cling to hope amid despair.
Reports from neighboring China add another layer of complexity to the unfolding crisis. Exiled Tibetans and advocacy groups have accused Chinese authorities of downplaying the impact of the flooding in border regions, where the official death toll stands at 16 with over 546 individuals still unaccounted for. These claims have been dismissed by Beijing as “malicious smearing” and “sensationalism.”
Adding to the confusion, misinformation is rampant on social media, with numerous fake and manipulated visuals circulating online. The Nepal Press Council has responded by establishing a portal for the public to report misleading content, aiming to combat the spread of false information during this crisis.
International aid has begun to flow in, with India’s specialized rescue teams making headway at hydropower sites in Nepal. The Indian Ambassador, Naveen Srivastava, noted that work continues despite adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, China has pledged to send DNA testing experts and additional relief supplies, including drones and water purification equipment.
As the situation evolves, the NDRRMA continues to issue alerts for several districts across eastern, central, and western Nepal, including areas such as Taplejung, Kathmandu, and Gorkha. The agency emphasizes the importance of vigilance for those residing in flood-prone areas, as the risk of further flash floods remains high.
