Reports are emerging that a former Australian Defence Force soldier, affectionately known as "Mozzie the Aussie," has been killed while serving as a combat medic in Ukraine. This tragic news has prompted investigations by Australian authorities, though details remain unconfirmed.
Mozzie was part of the Ukrainian International Legion's Med Team Alpha and had previously served with the Townsville-based 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. His commitment to helping others on the battlefield earned him respect among his peers. Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel Phil Thompson paid tribute to him on social media, highlighting his selflessness and courage.
"Mozzie saved countless lives on the battlefield," Thompson stated, expressing his condolences to the soldier's family, friends, and fellow battalion members in both Australia and Ukraine. While the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is inquiring into the situation, the soldier's full identity has been withheld to protect his family's privacy.
In a video shared by Med Team Alpha, Mozzie spoke about his motivation to fight in Ukraine, stating that his military background made the opportunity to assist the country a perfect fit. The conflict has seen around 16,000 foreign volunteers from various countries join Ukrainian forces.
