Netflix Announces New Sonic Series Aimed at Preschoolers

Netflix is venturing back into Sonic the Hedgehog territory with an upcoming animated series tailored for the upper preschool demographic. Following the success of the 3D animated series Sonic Prime, which concluded in 2024, the streaming giant has confirmed that this new show will capture the attention of younger fans who are just beginning to engage with Sonic’s video games.

Targeting Young Audiences

The new Sonic series is crafted specifically for children who are transitioning into the world of gaming, aiming to resonate with their adventurous spirit. Although a title has yet to be announced, the project is being developed by Carlos Stevens alongside Sega’s head producer, Toru Nakahara. Sega describes this fresh adaptation as a “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series” that will deliver an engaging mix of excitement and relatability for young viewers.

Expanding the Sonic Universe

This new series is part of a broader collaboration between Netflix and Sega. In addition to the Sonic show, a live-action film titled Stranger Than Heaven is in the works, reportedly set for a January 2027 release. This film will explore the journey of a foreigner in early 20th-century Japan, evolving from a destitute outsider to a formidable yakuza leader and entertainment mogul. Nakahara will also be producing this project.

More Projects on the Horizon

Moreover, Sega is planning a feature film adaptation of the Crazy Taxi video game franchise, with writing duties assigned to the duo responsible for the recent Naked Gun reboot. This collaboration includes producers from the live-action Sonic films, hinting at a promising future for Sega’s cinematic ventures. Nakahara expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started.”
