New Conservation Initiative Aims to Revive Uganda's Ishasha Lions

In a significant move towards wildlife conservation, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to launch a decade-long Conservation Management Partnership (CMP) for the Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth Protected Area. This initiative is designed to bolster wildlife protection efforts and address the dwindling lion population in the region.

Reviving the Lion Population

The Ishasha Sector, renowned for its unique tree-climbing lions, forms a vital part of the Greater Virunga Landscape, a rich biodiversity hotspot that connects Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park with Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unfortunately, the lion population in Ishasha has plummeted from approximately 80 lions recorded in the 1970s to a fraction of that today, raising alarms about their genetic and demographic sustainability. The new partnership aims to prioritize the restoration of this iconic species.

Strategic Conservation Measures

As part of the CMP, the UWA and WCS will collaborate to enhance wildlife protection, rehabilitate habitats, promote tourism, and mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Should the need arise, the partnership may also consider translocating lions to support the existing population, ensuring that such actions comply with national laws and international conservation standards.

Commitment to Local Communities

The initiative is not just about wildlife; it also emphasizes the importance of engaging local communities. By fostering partnerships with residents living near the protected area, the CMP aims to ensure that conservation efforts yield tangible benefits for people, thereby enhancing both ecological and social outcomes. This co-management model builds on over 50 years of collaboration between UWA and WCS, showcasing a shared dedication to restoring the ecological balance of Ishasha while empowering local stakeholders.
