New York Commemorates 25 Years Since 9/11 with New Moment of Silence

On Friday, New York City held a solemn ceremony at Ground Zero to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, introducing a seventh moment of silence dedicated to victims who later suffered from illnesses related to that tragic day. This new addition is set to become a permanent feature of the annual remembrance event.
The six previous moments of silence honored the pivotal events of 9/11: the crashes of two planes into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon attack, and the downing of United Airlines Flight 93. The first moment was observed at 8:46 a.m., coinciding with the impact of the first aircraft.
Relatives of the victims participated by reading the names of those inscribed at the memorial, which totals 2,983, including those lost in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The reading concluded just before 1 p.m. Among the dignitaries present were Vice President J. D. Vance and all four living former presidents: George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden. Notably, public officials abstained from giving speeches, in keeping with the event’s traditions.
