Next Generation of Tractor Drivers Keeps Tradition Alive at Local Pull

In a heartwarming display of tradition and skill, young tractor enthusiasts Jackson Kovac and Angus McKenzie took to the field at the recent Tractor Restoration and Appreciation Club of Sunraysia's (TRACS) annual tractor pull in Red Cliffs. At just 10 and 11 years old, respectively, these boys are not only showcasing their driving prowess but also continuing a legacy established by their grandfathers.
This year's event saw Jackson make his debut, something he had eagerly anticipated after watching his friend Angus compete the previous year. Driving his grandfather's tractor, Jackson has spent the last two years honing his skills, even practicing on the family’s sled at home. During the competition, he took the wheel of two different tractors, delighting in the thrill of the pull.
For Jackson, tractor pulling is more than just a sport; it's a family affair. His grandfather, Ross Kovac, has been involved in the sport for over three decades and began his journey at an age even younger than Jackson. “I was born and bred on the farm, so I was driving tractors at the age of probably four,” Ross shared, reminiscing about his early days in tractor pulls.
Inheriting a Passion
Similarly, Angus McKenzie attributes his love for tractors to the influence of his grandfather, Alan McKenzie. Having spent countless hours in the garage assisting Alan, Angus developed a strong affinity for machinery. With six years of driving under his belt and two tractor pulls to his name, he’s now embarking on personal projects, including rebuilding his own tractor.
Ensuring the Future of TRACS
The generational connection within the TRACS club is vital, especially as many of its 130 members are in their 70s and 80s. Both grandfathers expressed the importance of attracting younger participants to ensure the sport's longevity. “It's good to see a few young ones starting to come through the system,” Alan noted, emphasizing the need for the next generation to carry the torch.
As Jackson and Angus continue to develop their skills, they represent a bright future for tractor pulling, ensuring that the traditions of their forebears are not only preserved but also thrive in the years to come.
