The Rising Costs of Youth Sports: Families Facing Over $4,500 Annual Expenses

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 2 min read

Recent research has unveiled that Australian families are grappling with skyrocketing costs associated with community sports, with expenses averaging over $4,500 per child annually. This figure, part of a report commissioned by the Australian Sports Commission and conducted by Federation University, reflects a growing financial burden on families as they strive to keep their children active in sports.

In the Harmsworth household of Rockhampton, parents Paula and Aaron are no strangers to the financial strains of youth sports. With three children—Sienna, Jace, and Indy—actively participating in various sports, the couple often finds themselves evaluating their budget against the invaluable lessons their children learn through athletics. “There is no price tag on what the kids learn through sport,” Aaron stated, emphasizing the importance of respect and resilience that their kids gain from these experiences.

Breaking Down the Costs

The comprehensive study highlights an array of costs, including registration fees, equipment, uniforms, coaching, travel, and even lost parental income due to sports commitments. On average, adults participating in sports spend around $2,894 annually. The survey, which included approximately 5,500 participants across Australia, indicated that while the costs for children were similar in both metropolitan and regional areas, regional families faced steeper travel and accommodation expenses.

Impact on Family Life

The financial implications extend beyond mere dollars and cents. Aaron Harmsworth remarked on the sacrifice of personal time, noting that family vacations often revolve around sporting events. He explained, “You accrue leave and, all of a sudden, you’re using your leave on a sporting trip.” This year alone, their sporting commitments have taken them on extensive travels across Australia, necessitating careful planning and organization.

Despite the financial challenges, experts like Rochelle Eime, the lead researcher of the study, believe the benefits of community sports far outweigh the costs. She advocates for the importance of community sports in developing youth, stating that while the costs may be daunting, the life skills gained through participation are invaluable. Eime also noted that many sporting clubs are proactively addressing these costs by repurposing equipment and supporting state government initiatives that can alleviate some financial burdens on families.
