One Nation Proposes Superannuation Diversion to Alleviate Living Costs

In a bold move aimed at easing financial pressures for Australians, One Nation has introduced a proposal that would allow individuals paying rent or mortgages to divert a portion of their superannuation to bolster their income for a limited period.
Under this plan, individuals can opt to receive 3 percent of their compulsory superannuation contributions directly from their super funds, while employers will continue to pay the full 12 percent. This initiative is designed to provide immediate financial relief, while maintaining a commitment to retirement savings, as the existing superannuation will remain untouched.
One Nation leader Pauline Hanson emphasized the importance of this policy in light of rising living costs, asserting that it would give Australians “breathing room” to manage essential expenses like groceries and utility bills. She stated, “That’s a real boost to help you pay the rent or the mortgage, leaving more room for groceries, power bills and the costs of raising a family.” The proposed option would be available for a maximum of three years, ensuring that at least 9 percent of contributions still goes toward retirement.
