Onimusha: A Rollercoaster of Action and Flaws

By Editor • September 11, 2026 • 1 min read

Capcom's latest release, "Onimusha: Way of the Sword," presents a thrilling yet uneven experience reminiscent of an album featuring both chart-topping hits and forgettable tracks. This reboot marks the franchise's first entry since 2006 and offers players a journey through Japan's storied past, filled with mythical creatures and intense swordplay.

Embarking on a Legendary Quest

In this iteration, gamers assume the role of the famed swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, whose character design is inspired by the iconic actor Toshiro Mifune. Set during the early Edo Period from 1603 to 1867, Musashi's mission is clear: to hone his martial prowess. However, his journey takes a dark turn when he encounters a wave of genma, the series' infamous monstrous adversaries. This confrontation leads to Musashi's demise, only to be resurrected as an onimusha, or 'demon warrior,' through a powerful gauntlet bestowed upon him by a mysterious oni.

Highs and Lows of Gameplay

While "Onimusha: Way of the Sword" showcases exhilarating moments that can easily overshadow its shortcomings, players may find themselves grappling with certain aspects of the game that detract from the overall experience. The highs of combat and storytelling can make the lows feel less significant, yet they remain noticeable within the gameplay.
