Pitso Mosimane Takes the Helm Again at Bafana Bafana

Pitso Mosimane is back in charge of the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, marking his return after a 14-year hiatus. His first tenure ended following a disappointing qualification attempt for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), but since then, Mosimane has forged a remarkable coaching career that places him among Africa's finest.

Having succeeded Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who left after a successful five-year run, Mosimane aims to build on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor. Broos not only instilled discipline and self-belief within the team but also led Bafana Bafana to their first World Cup appearance in over a decade and a third-place finish at the 2023 Afcon.

“The main focus is for Bafana Bafana to qualify for the next Afcon and return to the World Cup,” Mosimane stated, demonstrating his ambitious vision for the team's future. He acknowledges the groundwork laid by Broos, emphasizing that the upcoming challenge includes qualifying for the 2027 Afcon, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Building a New Team

In his return, Mosimane has opted for a fresh approach by assembling a coaching staff he knows well, including fitness coach Kabelo Rangoaga and performance analyst Musi Matlaba. He has also brought on board Morena Ramoreboli, who previously led Botswana's national team to their first Afcon qualification in over a decade. Ramoreboli's experience is expected to enhance Mosimane's strategy as they work towards the upcoming tournaments.

A Confident Approach

Known for his unfiltered honesty and self-confidence, Mosimane has matured since his last stint with Bafana Bafana. He has achieved significant success with clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, winning multiple African Champions League titles. His former mentor, Jomo Sono, believes that Mosimane’s straightforwardness can be an asset, stating, “A yes is a yes and a no is a no.” With this mindset and a determined approach, Mosimane is poised to guide Bafana Bafana toward new heights.
