Pochettino Calls for Spurs to Be Declared 2016-17 Champions

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

In a bold statement, Mauricio Pochettino has argued that Tottenham Hotspur should be awarded the Premier League title for the 2016-17 season, claiming Chelsea’s breaches of competition rules invalidate their championship. Pochettino, who led Spurs from 2014 to 2019, believes that the title should rightfully belong to his team, which finished second to Chelsea that season.

Chelsea's Rule Breaches

Chelsea faced a £10.75 million fine in March 2023 after being charged with 74 historical breaches of Football Association rules. These infractions included making £47 million in undisclosed payments to unregistered agents and third parties during transfers from 2011 to 2018. Following an appeal, a six-point deduction was set aside, allowing them to retain their title.

Pochettino's Perspective

Pochettino expressed his view that if Chelsea admitted to breaking the rules, then Spurs, as the second-best team, should be recognized as champions. “We should win one title, one Premier League,” he stated. He highlighted the unfairness of the situation, noting that had the playing field been equal, Spurs might have strengthened their squad and potentially altered the outcome of the season.

As the former manager of Tottenham and now in charge of Chelsea, Pochettino's comments may stir controversy among fans. He emphasized, “I’m not scared to say the truth,” while acknowledging that his statements might not sit well with Chelsea supporters.
