Rawalpindi and Islamabad Schools Closed Amid Heavy Downpour

On Tuesday morning, Rawalpindi and Islamabad were hit by substantial rainfall, prompting the district administration to declare a holiday for schools in Rawalpindi. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported alarming water levels in Leh Nullah, reaching 29 feet at Kattarian and 23.5 feet at Gawalmandi.
As 200mm of rain fell in the catchment areas, evacuations commenced in the affected regions. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal warned of potential urban flooding in the twin cities' low-lying areas, emphasizing that emergency services were on high alert to manage the situation.
Data from the PMD indicated significant rainfall across the region, with Saidpur receiving 104mm and Shamsabad experiencing 201mm. In Islamabad, the district commissioner reported that 150mm of rain had led to overflowing drains and flooded roads, while some basements were also affected. Dewatering efforts were underway following a wall collapse in D12, but fortunately, there were no reported casualties.
Traffic authorities urged motorists to exercise caution due to water accumulation, advising them to allow extra travel time and use fog lights in low visibility. Former climate minister Sherry Rehman highlighted the severity of the flooding, sharing distressing footage of submerged vehicles.
