Remarkable Viking Age Silver Hoard Unearthed in Finland

A significant archaeological find has emerged from the depths of Sysmä, Finland, where a metal detectorist recently uncovered the largest known collection of Viking Age silver coins in the country. This remarkable discovery, weighing nearly 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms), was made by Kalle Lappinen on September 3, 2023, in a forest near the Sysmä church village.

Local archaeologist Esko Tikkala, from the Lahti Historical Museum, confirmed the record-breaking nature of the hoard, stating it surpasses the previous largest find from 1895, which was about 4.9 pounds (2.2 kilograms). The treasure, which is believed to consist of thousands of coins and other valuable items, was stored in two bark containers, hinting at a substantial historical significance.

Unraveling the Mystery of the Hoard

While Tikkala has yet to catalog the coins, he noted the diversity of their origins, suggesting extensive trade networks during the Viking era. The coins are thought to date from between 1000 and 1050 CE, with some minted in Scandinavia, Germany, and even Britain around the time of the Norman Conquest. Notably, the discovery also includes dirhams, silver coins from the Islamic world, which could indicate connections to trade routes extending as far as Al-Andalus in Spain or the Byzantine Empire.

Viking Connections and Cultural Insights

Despite the treasure's ties to the Viking Age, Tikkala emphasized that there is currently no direct evidence linking the hoard to Viking plunder. However, the presence of “payment silver” suggests a cultural practice used by both Vikings and the Pictish tribes of Scotland, indicating potential trading activities with the Romans. The hoard's contents, which also include a silver bracelet, clasp, and bead, may further illuminate the identity of those who buried this significant trove.
