U.S. Government Supports Africell with $100 Million Loan to Compete Against Chinese Tech

The Trump administration has taken a significant step to bolster American influence in Africa's technology sector by approving a nearly $100 million loan to Africell, the only U.S.-owned mobile network operator on the continent. This strategic funding, amounting to $99.6 million, was confirmed by Africell itself and is aimed at countering the growing dominance of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

The loan, sourced from the U.S. Export-Import Bank, is set to enhance U.S.-based employment opportunities within the telecommunications industry while reinforcing America's technological leadership abroad. Africell plans to utilize these funds to acquire American and European equipment for its network expansion in Angola, where it aims to strengthen its presence. The company also operates in Congo, Sierra Leone, and Gambia, further extending its reach across the region.

This financial injection comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny over Huawei, which has established itself as a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure in Africa, reportedly contributing to more than half of the continent's 4G and 5G networks. The Trump administration has expressed national security concerns regarding Huawei's operations, urging allies to avoid using its products in critical wireless networks. In addition to telecommunications, the U.S. is also focusing on countering Chinese influence in other vital sectors in Africa, including the mining of rare earth elements essential for advanced technology and defense systems.
