Rent the Runway Appoints Paige Thomas as New CEO

Rent the Runway is embarking on a new chapter as it appoints Paige Thomas as its chief executive officer, president, and board member. Thomas, who previously served as chief commercial officer, brings over 30 years of retail expertise to the forefront of the company.

With her ascendance, interim CEO Teri Bariquit will transition to the role of non-executive chair of the board, while Dhiren Fonseca steps down as executive chairman but will continue as a director. Thomas expressed her commitment to enhancing the customer experience, stating, “I’m focused on listening to our customer and making every decision through her lens.” She emphasized the importance of operational excellence and reaffirmed the company's dedication to its unique fashion service platform.

Bariquit, who led the company after the departure of co-founder Jennifer Hyman in May, is enthusiastic about handing over the reins to Thomas. She commented on the clarity of the company’s direction, focusing on becoming a premium fashion service platform that offers customers access to high-quality fashion, whether through rentals or purchases. This strategic pivot is aimed at enhancing customer engagement and driving profitability.

In recent financial reports, Rent the Runway announced a 20.8% increase in revenues, reaching $97.7 million for the second quarter ending July 31. The company also noted a slight rise in average active subscribers, now totaling 148,259. As Rent the Runway refines its focus, it is scaling back certain initiatives, including its online marketplace and a proposed business-to-business dry-cleaning venture, to better align with its core operations.

Investors, including Story3 Capital Partners and Nexus Capital Management, remain supportive, providing a $10 million term loan to bolster the company’s strategic initiatives. Bariquit noted, “There’s real opportunity from a revenue perspective,” highlighting the potential for growth through subscription and resale models.
