Revamping a Vintage Classic: Transforming My Mom’s Jacket for Modern Style

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

This season's fashion trends have inspired a fresh take on classic silhouettes, prompting a creative journey to revive a cherished family piece. The narrow shoulders and structured styles seen in the latest Jil Sander and Prada collections have led many to reassess their wardrobes, including myself.

My mother’s oversized camel Max Mara jacket, a staple since my college days and a gift from her, seemed outdated as trends shifted. Purchased in the late '90s when tailored looks were emerging, this jacket still held sentimental value and quality. So, rather than letting it gather dust, I decided to give it a new life by shrinking it to align with the current fashion landscape.

A Tailor's Touch

To embark on this transformation, I sought the expertise of Gage Flores from Age Design Services, a unique tailoring business operating out of a truck in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Flores was enthusiastic about the challenge, noting an uptick in requests for silhouette adjustments, especially on pieces with history.

The Transformation

During our fitting, we agreed on several modifications: upgrading the single-button closure to a stylish double-breasted design, sharpening the sleeve heads, and snugging the waist for a more defined shape. Just two days later, the jacket emerged revitalized yet still familiar, retaining its nostalgic charm while incorporating modern elements such as suede cuffs. When I shared the revamped look with my mother, her delight was evident, and she humorously acknowledged the jacket’s newfound hipness. This experience reaffirmed the idea that the best fashion is personal and tailored to reflect one’s unique style.
