Romania Selects Cannes Winner 'Fjord' for Oscar Bid

Romania has officially chosen Cristian Mungiu's acclaimed film 'Fjord' as its entry for the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. This powerful drama features Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan as fundamentalist parents who move to a small Norwegian village, only to face accusations of child abuse that challenge their beliefs and parenting methods.

'Fjord,' which blends Romanian, Norwegian, and English dialogue, premiered at Cannes, where it garnered the prestigious Palme d’Or. This win automatically qualifies it for the Oscars, regardless of Romania's selection.

Mungiu, who previously won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,' has yet to receive an Oscar nomination. 'Fjord' has potential not only for Best International Feature but also for Best Original Screenplay. To date, Romania's only Oscar nominee remains the documentary 'Collective,' which did not win.
