Severe Storms Cause Chaos Across Gauteng, North West, and Northern Cape

Severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc across South Africa's Gauteng, North West, and Northern Cape regions over the weekend, prompting road closures, home damage, and ongoing weather warnings. The South African Weather Services issued alerts for severe thunderstorms, predicting adverse conditions through the weekend and into the early part of the week.

On Friday, September 4, heavy rain and strong winds led to localized flooding, particularly in Johannesburg, where authorities reported several vehicles trapped in high water at the intersection of Siemert Road and Currey Street. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) urged motorists to avoid flooded areas and exercise caution when navigating the treacherous roads.

As the intense cut-off low-pressure system continued to influence the weather, additional reports emerged of infrastructure damage in the North West province, including homes in Setlagole suffering roof damage due to strong winds. Local authorities activated emergency management teams to assist with the disaster response, while Eskom noted power interruptions in several areas. Warnings remain in effect as the region braces for further thunderstorms into the beginning of the week, although conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday.
