Sindh AG Disrupts Commission Hearing on Mir Raza Ali Murder Case

KARACHI: The ongoing judicial inquiry into the murder of Mir Raza Ali experienced a significant disruption on Tuesday when Sindh Advocate General Jawad Dero interrupted the proceedings, leading to a notice being issued to Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar.

The incident unfolded during the testimony of Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed, who was providing crucial insights into the post-mortem examination findings. Justice Omar Sial, presiding over the one-member commission, expressed his disappointment at Dero's objection to questions posed by the victims’ family’s legal representative.

Objection Raises Eyebrows

Justice Sial remarked, “It is regrettable that the commission’s proceedings have been interrupted by the Sindh Advocate General. His objection to the family’s counsel asking questions is surprising.” This interruption coincided with Dr. Syed's revelations about inconsistencies in the initial autopsy of Ali’s body, which subsequently led to a second autopsy that ruled out suicide as a cause of death.

Call for Transparency

The commission's order referenced comments made by Sindh Assembly member Faryal Talpur, who advocated for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for Ali. The commission noted that the government has a fundamental responsibility to maintain public confidence in the justice system.

Justice Sial issued a notice to Home Minister Lanjar to appear before the commission on September 10 to clarify whether the family is indeed prevented from asking questions to ensure justice is served. He emphasized the commission's role in determining the relevance of queries to the case proceedings.

Background of the Case

The case has been shrouded in controversy since Ali's body was discovered on July 29, following his disappearance on July 28. Initial autopsy reports raised numerous questions, prompting a second examination after the family's persistent demands for clarity. The second autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound, contradicting earlier suggestions that the death may have been a suicide.
