Solar-Powered E-Ink Watch Combines Nostalgia with Modern Tech

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 1 min read

The LightInk watch, a new entry in the realm of wearables, is making waves with its exclusive solar power functionality. Unlike traditional smartwatches, this affordable device is built on the ESP32 platform and boasts features like WiFi, Bluetooth, LoRa, and GPS, all displayed on a compact 1.54-inch e-ink screen.

This innovative project traces its origins back to 2019 when creator Daniel Ansorregui, an electrical engineer, aimed to develop a solar watch capable of transmitting LORA packets. His journey began with a Heltec Wireless stick lite and an external e-ink display, eventually leading him to the Watchy platform, which provided a solid foundation despite lacking a sleek design and solar capabilities.

Despite efforts to enhance the Watchy with solar technology, the watch only achieved a disappointing 40 days of uptime on a single charge. Ansorregui's vision of a truly autonomous solar-powered watch continues to evolve, reflecting his passion for optimizing solar technology in wearable devices.
