Spanish PM Denies Morocco's Role in Ceuta Migrant Surge

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez addressed lawmakers on Thursday, asserting that there is no "solid proof" to support claims that Morocco orchestrated the migrant surge into Ceuta last July. His statement followed the release of a police report suggesting that the influx was a coordinated effort rather than a spontaneous migration.
Sanchez emphasized, "No institution – not the diplomatic service, nor the European Commission, nor any international body – has provided the Spanish government with any solid proof that Morocco planned or carried out the incident. None whatsoever." Despite this, he acknowledged that Moroccan Gendarmerie police allowed crossings during a critical 10-hour window when arrivals peaked.
The police report indicated that Moroccan security forces were present but deployed in smaller numbers, failing to effectively manage the crowds. Some officers reportedly directed migrants toward the crossing, although there was no verified evidence of official orders from Moroccan authorities.
In light of the ongoing crisis, Sanchez called for King Felipe VI to visit Ceuta and Melilla, which have not seen a royal visit since 2007, to reinforce state support for these sensitive territories.
