Survey Reveals Strong Support for Increased Disability Benefits in the UK

Nearly half of the British public believes that the government should allocate more resources to disability benefits, according to a recent survey. This data indicates that any proposals aimed at reducing support for disabled individuals could pose significant political risks for major parties.

The British Social Attitudes survey, conducted by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), revealed that 49% of participants support increased spending on disability benefits, even if it necessitates higher taxes. In stark contrast, only 7% of respondents favored reducing spending in this area. Interestingly, support for enhanced funding is not limited to left-leaning voters; approximately 40% of individuals identifying as right-leaning also expressed a desire for increased benefits.

Public Sentiment on Welfare Spending

Despite a general decline in public support for welfare benefits, the backing for disability-related assistance remains notably robust. Dr. Robert de Vries, a senior lecturer at the University of Kent and co-author of the BSA report, remarked, "Despite growing political divisions on welfare, support for disability benefits remains remarkably strong. Very few people favor cuts; disabled individuals are seen as among the most deserving recipients of support." This sentiment suggests that any attempts to cut disability benefits could backfire politically across the spectrum.

Political Landscape and Disability Benefits

The survey also highlighted differing opinions among voters of various political affiliations. While 7% of Conservative voters and 11% of Reform UK voters supported reducing benefits for disabled individuals unable to work, the majority of respondents across all party lines expressed a desire for increased support. The findings come at a time when the government is awaiting the final report from Sir Stephen Timms regarding the personal independence payment (PIP) scheme, with concerns already raised about the current application process being described as "dehumanising" and "degrading."
