Survivors Struggle to Rebuild Lives After Nepal's Catastrophic Floods

In the wake of devastating flash floods that swept through Nepal, leaving entire villages buried under mud, survivors are now grappling with the harsh realities of displacement and loss. A school in the remote Rasuwa district has been repurposed as a temporary shelter for around 200 individuals who have lost their homes.

Located about 30 kilometers from the Nepal-China border, this makeshift refuge is a crucial lifeline for those affected. Aid workers are making treacherous journeys, often taking up to nine hours on rough roads, to deliver essential supplies. Madhav Neupane, an employee with Human Development and Community Services, emphasized the dire need for food and electricity, stating, "Food is scarce, so I’m bringing rice, lentils, and oil. There is no electricity, so we’re also bringing solar power banks. Since people are homeless, we’ve also got tents with us."

The emotional toll on survivors is palpable. Ranjina Tamang, a flood survivor, expressed her anguish: "I don’t know if I’m dreaming or if it’s real. I’ve lost 11 members of my family. Some are missing, others may be dead – I don’t know." The search for survivors continues, with reports of a Chinese national and two Nepalese workers being rescued from mud-choked tunnels.

Despite the ongoing rescue efforts, more than 5,600 people remain missing, and the living conditions in the overcrowded camps are becoming increasingly challenging as the community rallies to support those affected.
