Susan Sarandon Claims Hollywood Roles Lost Due to Pro-Palestine Stance

At the Venice Film Festival this past Sunday, actress Susan Sarandon made headlines by declaring that her outspoken support for Palestine has cost her movie opportunities. During a press conference, she addressed the shifting narrative surrounding the Gaza conflict and how it has affected her career.

Sarandon revealed that despite a growing awareness among the public, she has faced significant pushback within Hollywood. "There are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still," she explained. She attributed some of the challenges to a prevailing power structure that remains resistant to alternative viewpoints, noting that her situation is not unique. "I think there are other people who have been told that it is impossible to be involved in certain films due to their beliefs," she added.

In her remarks, Sarandon acknowledged the warm reception she feels from international audiences while emphasizing the challenges posed by entrenched positions within the industry. "I found my family, I found my people, and I’m OK," she stated, expressing her gratitude toward director Andrea Pallaoro for casting her in his film, The Echo Chamber, despite potential industry backlash.

Sarandon's recent controversy arose following comments at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City, which led to her receiving backlash and ultimately being dropped by United Talent Agency. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed regret over her phrasing that unintentionally minimized the historical suffering of Jewish people.

In The Echo Chamber, which premiered at the festival, Sarandon plays a retired rock singer. Critics have praised her performance, highlighting the depth and nuance she brings to her character, alongside co-stars Alicia Vikander and Luca Marinelli.
