Today marks the opening of a significant exhibition, "Henry Wessel — Photographs and Books," at The Grolier Club in New York City, showcasing over 65 prints by the influential photographer. This collection features not only Wessel's renowned Incidents and Traffic series but also selections from his Real Estate and Night Walks series, illustrating his unique approach to capturing everyday life.
Henry Wessel, who passed away in 2018, was a trailblazer in the realm of photography. Born in New Jersey, he discovered his passion for the art form while studying at Pennsylvania State University. After receiving a Guggenheim grant, Wessel relocated to the Bay Area and began teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he remained until 2014. His work predominantly features the distinctive light and character of California, alongside the diverse personalities inhabiting its neighborhoods.
A Unique Perspective on Everyday Scenes
The exhibition includes Wessel's early work, such as the gelatin silver print "Untitled" (1968), and spans projects created throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Wessel's methodology involved capturing images directly from his car in his Traffic series, where he sought to document the spontaneity of roadside moments. He noted the challenge of translating a fleeting visual experience into a photograph, emphasizing the importance of being prepared to seize opportunities for great shots.
Capturing Life After Dusk
In his Night Walks series, Wessel took to the streets with a tripod, documenting homes during the quiet hours of the night, contributing to the intimate feel of his work.
